The atmosphere of quiet relieves stress, depression and tension, replenishes our mental resources and reduces the risk of disease. When our brain is relaxed current ideas are connected with prior knowledge and this process gives birth to new ideas and solutions to problems.
When we set time aside to quite in the presence of God we are open to the possibility to hear Him speaking within. Solitude is not simply escaping the outside world but an opportunity to enter in deeper communication with God. It allows Him to bring increased self-awareness, healing and resolution.
Spiritual disciplines such as silent meditation on the word of God connect the body, mind and soul. Our system changes during those quiet moments of prayer. We come out of the retreat more likely to respond wisely to social interactions with greater compassion and empathy.
