Sinful Imitation Puts Us in Tension
Hi, today we’ll look into sinful imitations and how that puts us in a state of tension. Let’s begin by listing the different types of sinful imitation:
· Following the crowd has hidden dangers. It causes slow and silent character erosion. It lowers our moral standards, drawing us away from God, His blessings and protection. (Ex 23:2, 2Ki 17:15) Just because everyone does something it does not mean it’s biblically acceptable. Following the crowd can be a sinful path giving false sense of belonging yet leading to destruction.
· False Worship – Idolatry forbidden by God. An idol is a person or a thing that is admired greatly and it has become an object of our love and worship. Idols sneak in on us; it starts as aspirations that turn into obsessions. So many things can fall into this category – the dream of being married or having children, unrealistic expectations of our loved ones, material possessions, careers, etc. Placing our hopes and expectations on something or someone else other than God sets us up for great disappointments and frustrations. Manmade idols are insensitive (Dt 4:28), perishable (Isa 40:20), helpless (Isa 45:20, Jer 10:5), degrading (Ro 1:22-23), and unworthy (Ac 17:29).
· Bad Government Policies - When policies are based on principles and ideas that do not align with the Word of God it opens the door for pagan practices. (1Sa 8:19-20)
· Following the Pharisees – falling into the trap of hypocrisy. This type of sinful imitation leads to damage of our Christian character. (Mt 23:2-3) God intended for us to be the light to a fallen world. Our daily walk should reflect the Truth. We are to walk the talk.
As I mentioned in the beginning sinful imitation puts us in a state of tension. You see only God can truly fulfill the longings for acceptance and belonging. Searching for fulfillment away from the Lord leaves us disappointed, broken, frustrated and lonely. He is the All Sufficient One. We were not design to live life apart from God. His plan for redemption encompasses abundant life that is free from the bondage and disfigurement that sin brings.
Making it personal:
Let’s ask God to search our hearts and bring to mind the idols that crowd Him out. Are you holding on to unrealistic expectations that things and individuals will fill the emptiness and fulfill your dreams? May God give us the grace to face the truth, find freedom and live the life He has planned for us.
Walk with God and glorify His name.
