If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1Jn 1:9
It is not possible to walk the straight and narrow path when one’s heart is disfigured by sin. God commands us to guard our hearts for they are the wellspring of life. If the source is poisoned naturally the life dependent on it will be poisoned as well. The initial reaction of someone who has swallowed
poison is sheer panic. Next the instinct for self-preservation kicks in. There are two possible outcomes in a situation like this: death or rescue. When we allow sin to enter into our hearts every day we take a step in one of two directions: death – away from God or rescue – turning towards God and His plan for our lives.
Disfigured hearts lead to irrational thinking and behavior. (Jer 4:14, Mt 15:19) With that in mind let’s
review what characterizes a sinful walk?
· Absence of the Holy Spirit (Jude 18-19)
· Intentionally forgetting or ignoring God’s Word (2Pe 3:3-5)
· Ungodliness (Eph 2:2-3)
· Despising authority (2Pe 2:10)
· Focus on earthly pleasures and fulfillment (Php 3:18-19)
· It follows basic natural instincts – selfishness, stubbornness and disobedience (Jude 18, Jer 7:24)
· Living in lust, drunkenness, and indulgence in inappropriate activities without limits (1Pe 4:3-4)
· Disgrace is its pride (Php 3:18-20)
It is a path that ultimately trashes precious lives by misuse and submission to Satan. (Eph 2:2-3) The good news is that God provides a rescue for sinners. Jesus came into the world to save us and if we confess our sin/s He is faithful to forgive us. Confession has four parts; one – admitting guilt, second –repentance, third – separation, fourth - forgiveness and restoration. The moment we admit guilt the poison of sin starts to lose its power, sincere repentance and true separation from the ungodly behavior starts the process of healing and rebuilding. (2Sa 12:13, Ezr 10:11, Pr 28:13)
Making it personal
Let’s pray: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” (Ps 139: 23-24 NLT) "Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just." (Ps 51:1-4 NLT) "Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you." (Ps 51:10-13 NLT) "You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God." (Ps 51:16-17 NLT)
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
