Breastplate of Righteousness
The Breastplate is a piece of armor worn over the chest by a soldier in order to protect his vital organs. In the Bible we also see that a breastplate was part of the apparel of a Jewish High Priest. It signified protecting oneself from unrighteousness. (Ex28:15, Isa59:17)
Righteousness is a matter of the heart and is commanded by God. (Mt 5:20) It comes through Jesus Christ. (Php 1:11) We reflect righteousness when we are in conformity with what is morally good, when we follow God’s decrees despite our feelings and the difficulties of our present circumstances. The ability to obey to such extend comes by renewing our minds daily with the Word; allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts, words, actions and reactions. When reading Eph 6:14 we notice that the children of the Lord must stand firm with the breastplate of righteousness. As mentioned earlier this piece of the armor is intended to protect vital organs, most importantly the heart – the wellspring of life. (Pr 4:23)
The heart is the center of life:
· It determines our character – Pr 23:7
· It can be a source of evil – Mt 15:18
· It controls the speech – Lk 6:45
· It is the source of our faith – Ro 10:10
When our hearts are protected from the arrows of the enemy it becomes a fertile ground, allowing the fruits of the Spirit to grow.
Making it personal:
Now that we have clear definition of the function of the breastplate of righteousness let’s ask ourselves:
· Do I have a functioning breastplate?
· Is my heart protected?
· Is my heart a fertile ground?
Walk with God and glorify His name.
