In Eph 6:17 we are commanded to use the Scripture as a defensive weapon – a sword. The sword of a soldier has two purposes – to defend and to wound/cut. Let’s review how this applies in the life of the believer.
"Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." Eph 6:17
The Word is powerful and as we discovered in the previous posts it is essential in order for the armor of God to be functional. Scripture is divinely inspired and brings blessing to those who reverence it. When we spend time reading and studying Scripture we gain wisdom. It is written with the purpose of building us up and is the only weapon we’ve been given to use for defense.
Building us up as followers of Christ:
· Purifying our lives – Jn 17:17, Ps 119:9
· Authenticates the divinity of Christ – Jn 20:31
· Warns us – 1Co 10:11
· Gives knowledge of the eternal life – 1Jn 5:13
The only weapon we’ve been given to use for defense:
· Probing instrument - Heb 4:12
· Saving and Life-giving power – Ro 1:16, Eze 37:7
· Crushing Hammer – Jer 23:29
· Devouring Flame – Jer 5:14
As followers of Christ we are living witnesses of the Truth – Isa 43:10. Our ultimate aim is Christlikeness– 2Co 3:18. This can only happen when we allow God’s word to penetrate our minds and hearts. There is pruning and cultivating so we can bear fruit. We encounter temptations and assaults from the enemy during which we must stand firm. Putting on the armor of God means putting on His word - its putting on Christ. My prayer is that God will give us the grace to do so daily.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." Jn 1:1-5
