Going through the desert? - Prepare to meet with God!
Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness
Today we will focus on the word wilderness and the significance of the number forty.
In the Bible the number forty is associated with a period of probation, trial, and chastisement of God’s children. In the scripture on numerous occasions we read of individuals who had a wilderness experience, for example:
· Moses in the mount for 40 days receiving the law of God
· The Hebrew people lived in the Sinai desert for 40 years
· Jesus being tempered in the dessert for 40 days
· Jesus often withdraw in order to be alone in prayer
· King David while shepherding his father’s sheep and the times he had to flee from King Saul withdraw into the wilderness
Let’s define the word wilderness/desert - a place with no inhabitants. In the Bible spending time in the wilderness is associated with solitude or withdrawing from the world. It is a period of time dedicated to prayer, rest and transformation. (Lk5:16, Ps55:7-8, Jer9:2) It is meant for meditation on the word of God, remembering His promises and faithfulness. (Jos1:8, Ps119:148, Ps143:5) The person/s is/are refreshed, transformed and equipped for the work God has prepared for this particular season of life. (Ps4:4, Ps19:7, Eph4:11-13)
Making it personal:
I don’t know where you are this Lent season but if you are in the midst of a trial, feeling oppressed and lonely I want to encourage you to use this time to draw near to God. Pull away from the noise of this world; get closer to the Lord so you can hear him speak to you. Refresh your mind and soul by meditating on His word. Allow the Holy Spirit to penetrate and heal the dark and lonely places in your heart. It’s time to align with the will of God for your life. The wilderness experience is a time of probation and renewal (revival). Just a tool that the Lord uses to correct, reformat and equip you; so when you return to the world it will be in the power of the Holy Spirit doing the work He has prepared for you.
Don’t resent the wilderness, prepare to meet with God.
Walk with God and glorify His name.
